This piece first ran in Printers Row Journal, delivered to Printers Row members with the Sunday Chicago Tribune and by digital edition via email. Click to learn about joining Printers Row."There are no facts," Emerson once wrote, "only art." Let's call this a collection of essays, then a book about human wondering.Well, that sure cleared things up for my student. I eventually allowed that you could call what we were doing "creative nonfiction" and no one would object, but that I preferred to speak of the old-fashioned essay. This wonderful word derives, as anyone who writes on the subject is legally obligated to note, from the French essai, an attempt or experiment, Michel de Montaigne's metaphor for his testing of the question "Que sais-je?" Francis Bacon kindly delivered the word into our language, in imitation of the Frenchman.So the essay is the form in which we ask what we know. All of literature asks this, to varying degrees, but it's why the essay gets up in the morning, why it descends into the mines and comes up covered in coal dust and dead canaries. In this sense, the essay was invented by two ancient Greeks: Sophocles, who taught us we don't know ourselves (he wrote plays); and Socrates, who taught us we don't know much of anything (he didn't write at all). These seemingly banal truths echo throughout the writings of Montaigne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud.The essay is a Baedeker to unknown unknowns. Depending on my inner weather, I agree more or less with the philosopher Peter Unger: "Everybody is always ignorant of everything." This is, I think, not the most harmful attitude I could encourage my students to cultivate most undergraduates tend to be insufficiently skeptical about their own knowledge (there are Borgesian levels of irony lurking in that claim). Of course most of the practical work of any writing workshop takes place at less lofty heights: learning to recognize and avoid cliches; streamlining sentences and economizing prose; making language lilt; telling truths and untruths slant. But we make room to remember the wonder and doubt to which the essay lends the shape of art.What follows isn't a list of the "best" books in the genre the giants are obvious: Montaigne, Samuel Johnson, Jonathan Edwards, William Hazlitt, Emerson, Freud, Borges, James Agee and Walker Evans' "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men," George Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia," Joan Didion's "Slouching Towards Bethlehem." These are just some of my favorites; all they share is a commitment, in Wallace Stevens' words, to "see the sun again with an ignorant eye."The Stammering Century by Gilbert Seldes (1928)Here is what Greil Marcus called "the old, weird America." Seldes ventriloquizes the "stammering" of the cults and manias of the 19th century the fanatics and radicals, "the diet-faddists and the dealers in mail-order P {keyword} ersonality," the quacks and reformers, messiahs and mountebanks. "Men and women are down on all fours growling and snapping their teeth and ba {keyword} rking like dogs," Seldes writes of an evangelical camp-meeting in the Kentucky woods. Many people were surprised that a serious contender for the second-highest office in the land could, in the 21st century, decline to dissent from the judgment that the earth is 6,000 years old. I just thought, remembering "The Stammering Century," "Well, ain't that America."Patriotic Gore by Edmund Wilson (1962)This is the "Moby-Dick" of American nonfiction, refusing to be categorized or reined in, a loose possibles bag of personality, verve and history. Ostensibly a study of the literature of the Civil War, "Patriotic Gore" is crammed with irresistible anecdote, revelation and reappraisal. The major (Lincoln and Sherman, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Oliver Wendell Holmes) share the stage with the minor (Francis Grierson and John De Forest); they speak in many voices, a babel, but taken as a chorus, they remind us "that we, too, are devourers and that we, too, are talking cant."Dispatches by Michael Herr (1977)I avoided this book for a long time, because I thought I didn't need an American perspective on the obscene slaughter we rained on Indochina. I was wrong. This war correspondent's account of running manic and scared around Vietnam in the company of Errol Flynn's son is an American scripture. Robert Stone called "Dispatches" "the best personal journal about war, any war, that any writer has ever accomplished." It's that kind of book so good it sears you, you never really come back from it, like the war itself: "for years now there had been no country here but the war." Herr never wrote anything else that even came close to it, but neither did anyone else.Coming into the Country by John McPhee (1977)I've never been to Alaska, but who needs firsthand experience when you've got John McPhee? "Anchorage is that part of any city where the city has burst its seams and extruded Colonel Sanders." There are the expected bears, bugs and bush pilots, but McPhee's ear for lore {keyword} and eye for design make this much more than a travelogue.The Geography of the Imagination by Guy Davenport (1981)Maybe someday it will be common knowledge that Guy Davenport was one of the subtlest minds and finest writers America has yet produced. This collection is his most varied: Louis Agassiz, Balthus, Spinoza, table manners, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Ronald Johnson, prehistoric cave paintings each slides beneath the lens of Davenport's intellect, which discovers unsuspected lineages and correspondences. The title essay begins as a consideration of the imagination's debt to geography and somehow opens into a mind-boggling study of Edgar Allan Poe before inventorying each item in Grant Wood's "American Gothic." Just, I mean, come on.A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again by David Foster Wallace (1997) {keyword}
