CHINCOTEAGUE The Museum of Chincoteague Island is looking for information about life on the island during World War II.Intern Becca Lane, an undergraduate at the University of Maryland College Park, and Assistant Director Kristin M. Sullivan of the museum this summer conducted interviews with several residents who served in the war or had recollections of life on Chincoteague during wartime, in order to put together a picture of life here during World War II.If there are people who want to share stories, we would love to hear from them, Sullivan said.From what theyve heard so far, one prominent aspect among wartime memories is the importance of religion to Chincoteague residents.Additionally, watermens wives, who were used to their men being absent from home for long periods, appear to have had particular sympathy for servicemens wives, who during the war found themselves in a similar situation.Wed like to hear more of the female side of the story, Sullivan said.Among the more unusual items pertaining to World War II in the museums collection is a bar of soap recovered from a German U-boat.Also in the collection is the Junior Fire Company Secretarys book from 1942, which records the doings of a group of young Chincoteague men who supported the war effort by drilling in preparation for air raids and the like.The collection also includes photographs of Lee Savage, an island native who was a first lieutenant during the war, along with Savages uniform, letters and other artifacts provided by his family.There is also a photograph of members of the so-called Corsair Fleet, local fishing boats conscripted by the Coast Guard to look for enemy craft off the coast.The museums interest in researching islanders roles in World War II was sparked in part by conversations staff members had with some of Chincoteagues older residents, who talked about German boats being sunk offshore and other wartime happenings.A newspaper clipping Sullivan and Lane found in their research is from the May 12, 1943, Chicago Daily Tribune and tells of one such incident.( 2 of 2)It details how Chincoteague native Maurice D. Jester, a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Coast Guard, and his crew sank a German submarine 40 miles off Chincoteagues coast.We dropped three patterns of depth charges, Jester told an interviewer on a Chicago radio program, according to the article. He continued telling how the crew of the cutter Icarus sank the German sub.The first two charges damaged the sub and the third blew it to the surface. We were overmatched, but the Icarus shell fire <a href=http://farrdesign.com/jerseys/?id=2057>cheap hockey jersey</a> was so accurate that the battle was settled when the sub bounced to the surface.The museum is also interested in gathering information, including newspaper clippings and other historical artifacts, about the Chincoteague Naval Air Station.The U.S. Navy commissioned the Chincoteague Naval Air Station, located on the current site of the NASA Wallops Flight Facility main base, and also established an ordnance test station on Wallops Island itself in the 1940s.Chincoteague was in the news all over then, said museum director Bill Borges.One such news item is from the Nov. 22, 1945, Baltimore Sun. It tells of the death in an airplane crash at Chincoteague of Lt. Cmdr. Richard Wade Bond, 28. The Portland, Maine, native served with the Navy in the invasion of North Africa and was in five major engagements in the Pacific theater before being transferred to the Naval Air Corps in 1943.Another place researchers are learning about is Camp Fletcher, an Army camp located during the war at the spot where Church Street and Ridge Road intersect. The camp was named after Charles Herbert Fletcher, reported to be Accomack Countys first World War II casualty.A newspaper article from the Feb. 7, 1942, Baltimore Sun identifies Fletcher as a seaman first class and export gunner and says he was killed in action at sea. Fletcher was a graduate of Chincoteague High School who enlisted in the Coast Guard at Norfolk in October 1940.
